My To Kill a Mockingbird unit begins on Monday. What I really want to do is have students write about the book in something less than a vaccuum, like in a blogging situation. The thing is, I have no real idea how to do this, and I've spent a few days fiddling with Edublogs, but it doesn't seem very user-friendly and I just can't picture how it will work. I want students to all have their individual blogs but to comment on each others'. I want them all connected but independent. It doesn't seem that hard to set up, but I can't figure it out.
Grrrr...
I'm at the Mid-Atlantic Baseball Coaching Conference right now down in Bethesda, MD. Getting excited about the season, which doesn't begin for nearly three months!

Just a thought, might a wiki be more helpful? Using the main pages for Student to write their opinions, ideas and then have he 'discussion' used by other students to add their input. www.wikispaces.com is a helpful one- real supportive people behind the scenes too.

Oh, how I envy your students. To Kill a Mockingbird has been my sisters favorite book for years. I was never made to read it in highschool, and it wasn't until last years MPT Maryland Reads event where they had a free showing at the Senator and handed out free copies of the book that I finally sat down to get to know Jem and Scout.

Re: blogging dilema. Is livejournal blocked? You could set up a private community for your students and help them set up LJ accounts together. Then they could post their thoughts to the community, and comment on each others posts, all while having everything within the community private to each other.
