Email

I love it when my former students email me about their summer reading:

I have just gotten my book yesterday and i have already finished one. I am almost done the second book. I have finished reading "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian". That book was very good and funny. Now I'm reading "Kindred", which is very captivating and interesting. I just can not put the book down.

Summer Bridge starts August 7th, but I don't go back officially until the 24th. Kids start back up on the 31st.

I read Kindred myself this summer - great book. I was a little hesitant to start it since it was the only Octavia Butler book I hadn't read - I makes me sad to think I will never read an Octavia Butler book for the first time again. I was also a little worried that it is her most read book (I think) and often I'm disappointed by popularity.

Despite those misgivings, I loved it. I don't think it's my favorite - I'm too much of a sci-fi type, so I think Lilith's Brood is the top of my list.

It's odd to think that the books I picked out for fun in my childhood have made it into the classroom (Fahrenheit 451 for example). I wouldn't have minded reading something from the 20th century in high school, although I enjoyed most of what we read and I've even re-read some.

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian is a fantastic book. Not surprisingly, since it's pretty hard to go wrong with anything by Sherman Alexie.

Glad to hear that at least one of your students has discovered Alexie!

When a student has such enthusiasm in the summer it makes your job so much better to go back to in the fall.
